“…All night, we dream so long. Anybody ever wonder when they would see the sun up. Just remember when you come up, the show goes on.”
So this song has absolutely nothing to do with anything, other than the fact that I have it on replay on youtube every time I sit down at my computer. I mean I’m sure this is what you imagined me listening to right?
Ok so what did today consist of? Other than listening to the classy “Lupe Fiasco” that is…
To start off, I am exhausted. Today went by really fast. Majority of my days was spent at the Pompidou. The building is certainly NOT the least bit fitting with the rest of the city.
While it may be interesting and futuristic, it is definitely an eye sore for the French living in the area. It is HUMONGOUS and cannot go ignored no matter how hard you try.
We spent from 1:30-4pm in there casually browsing through every corner and aisle at all works of art. It was…long. Don’t get me wrong, I love art but by the end everything began to blend together like a jumbled pile of paintings, sculptures, and other odd creations.
There were some crazy, disturbing, beautiful, ironic, meaningful, strange pieces in there. I don’t even know if there are any words in the dictionary to describe some of these works. While I was there I wrote down a list of the one’s I found interesting and wanted to show you some of what I saw. I’m interested to know your responses.
1. Dorthea Tanning “Chambre 202”
2. Christina Iglesias “Untitled Passage II”
3. Niki de Saint Phalle “Crusifixion” and “La Mariee ou Eva Maria”
4. Pablo Picasso “Arlequin et Femme au Collier”
6Jackson Pollock “The Deep”
7. Vassily Kandinsky “Composition IX”
8. Mark Rothko “Garage”
9. Bernard Requichot “Ramages Etoiles”
10. Vassilakis Takis “Musicale”
(This one actually played music by what we believed to be a magnetic force)
As you can see, the artwork is very contemporary. There were also some pretty vulgar paintings in my opinion that I did not really feel comfortable putting up on here. Now I will admit, some were unnecessarily vulgar. I was really turned off by these and immediately walked away. When I noticed my roommates staring at one of them for a good 5 minutes, I decided to look at it more closely. I realized that it was about being raped and innocence being taken away involuntarily—as well as the reality of what our world can be. It was not vulgar but was actually rooted in something deep. As with everyone in our world, we have gone through tough times. Some are tougher than others. Most of the time I look at artwork for its aesthetics. Not at its meaning. Knowing what the artists is trying to say and express through each piece is important and can truly change your perspective. It is a way to communicate emotions, memories, and ideas that they may not feel comfortable verbalizing. That is what I took away from the Pompidou.
On the way home we saw a riot. Or something of the like. We actually weren’t sure what was going on. Again, the whole language thing would help. However we did agree that it was kind of nice not knowing what they were saying. Most of the Parisians seemed annoyed by their words. To us however, it was background noise. There was no connotation or meaning to what was coming out of their mouths. To us it was just sound.
NEWSFLASH: I also had my first bar experience tonight. Hence the late night/early morning posting here) What can I say? I'm a late bloomer. It was certainly an experience and I was amused with people watching. Oh yeah and did I mention the Steelers game was on? Oh and that they beat the Ravens? In all I'm not sure how I felt about the bar scene but if there's a game on... End result=Happy Amanda.
Good night!
